Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

In honor of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month this November, we wanted to take the time to highlight an important nonprofit that is making huge strides in their research and funding to prevent, slow, and hopefully reverse Alzheimer’s disease. Learn more about one of the nonprofits we work closely with, Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, in our Q&A with them below.

What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is defined as an irreversible, progressive disorder that results in the physical atrophy of the brain. Memory functions slowly slip away, and cognitive skills are lost. Eventually, the degradation of the brain can result in heart attack, stroke, or other physical maladies that lead to death: Alzheimer’s disease is always fatal. It is believed that Alzheimer’s disease begins to develop in the brain up to 20 years before the first symptoms occur.

At this time, there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease. There are a few medications that can provide partial, temporary relief in the disease’s early stages-but they are ineffective against cognitive decline and physical deterioration.

What is your organization’s vision?

The vision for Cure Alzheimer’s Fund was set by our founders. Frustrated with the slow pace of research about the disease, they applied their experience in venture capital and corporate startups to build an organization specifically designed to accelerate research, make bold bets, and eradicate the disease. The organization’s unwavering focus on finding a cure is made possible by our Board of Directors, which finances all of our overhead expenses so that 100% of all donations go to research.

Tell us more about the research you are funding.

Researchers around the world recognize that the brain is the most complex organ in the human body-and possibly the most complex biological structure that has been identified. Each day, new discoveries are made that expand our knowledge about how the brain works. Investigating maladies of the brain is a difficult endeavor… but one that is paramount to our future.

We are honored to work with the world’s leading scientists who pursue the cure for Alzheimer’s disease with passion and dedication. Since our founding in 2004, we have provided research grants for some of the most significant breakthroughs in the field. This unrelenting and untiring commitment is helping to develop a better understanding of the disease… and will ultimately contribute to the cure.
