Best Varietals to Beat the Heat

Memorial Day is almost here, which means the season of drinking and wearing white has begun, right? Thankfully, the rules have changed a bit over the years and now it’s acceptable to enjoy reds alongside whites all summer. So what are the best varietals to beat the heat? Check out the recommendations from our VP of Winemaking and Estate Operations, Mari Wells Coyle below!

Summertime Reds

My favorite reds for warmer months can be easily chilled down to keep you cool. For me, the best wines to chill are from our Vintner Collection and include our Pinot Noir, Red Blend, and Cabernet Sauvignon. These reds will taste great even when thrown in an ice bucket along with your favorite whites.

The reason these wines are great chilled is because they don’t have too much tannin. A wine that is too tannic can become overpowering when brought to a cooler temperature. When cooling a red with less tannins, you’ll end up with a wine that still has a lot of fruit and stays balanced.

Refreshing Whites

There is no better way to beat the heat than with our Vintner Collection Pinot Grigio, Sparkling Rosé, and our new limited edition Red, White & Blue glitter brut (which is $10 off for Preferred Customers through September)! These light, crisp, and refreshing varietals are the perfect wines to sip poolside or bring along to your next outdoor picnic.

Pro Tip for Staying Cool

I love getting outdoors this time of year and keeping my wines cool is essential. If you don’t have a wine cooler or ice bucket, chiller sticks are a great way to keep wines on ice when the temperatures start to soar. Simply place the stick in a freezer, bring it along to your summer outing, and pop it directly into the bottle to bring down the temperature of your whites and reds.

Happy weekend!
