The Wines of Westeros: A Toast to the Final Season

Spring may be here, but winter is coming. The final season of Game of Thrones is just two weeks away, Arya ready for it?! To celebrate the beginning of the end, we decided to pair everyone’s favorite characters that have made it to the final battle with the ONEHOPE wines that best suit their dynamic personalities. So sit back and get ready as we take you through a tasting of Westeros… for the wine is dark and full of tannins.

Game of Thrones Wine Pairings

Cersei 

A character as cold, dark, and twisted as Cersei, deserves to be paired with rich red that has a bite. Our Russian River Valley Reserve Pinot Noir is elegant and sophisticated with tons of complexity. With notes of dark black raspberries coupled by earthy forest aromas, this Pinot perfectly mirrors Cersei’s complex layers and bold, maniacal demeanor.

Jaime

It is only fitting that we pair the sibling and lover of our Russian River Valley Reserve Pinot Noir, with a wine from the same grape family. Our Italian Delle Venezie Reserve Pinot Grigio is the white counterpart and sibling to Cersei’s wine. Hailing from a rich winemaking region in Italy, this dry, zesty white wine is the perfect fit for this wealthy, sarcastic, and prideful Lannister. As Jamie gets ready to fight the white walkers in the final season, you can raise a glass with your good hand (sorry Jamie) and enjoy this distinctive white with friends!

Tyrion 

A Lannister as noble and dynamic as Tyrion begs to be paired with a big, bold wine with a personality to match. Our Rutherford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is rich, flavorful, and exclusive coming from Blocks 1 and 5 of our private vineyard in Napa Valley. We picked only the best of the best for Tyrion, because that’s what he does… he drinks wine, and he knows things.

Daenerys

The Mother of Dragons deserves nothing short of a royal, magical wine worthy of celebrating her many victories. Our California Celebration Brut Sparkling Wine, Silver Glitter Edition, is dry but flavorful with a lasting, memorable finish. Much like this sparkling wine, if shaken… Daenerys can be EXPLOSIVE!

Jon Snow

Since Jon is a perfect specimen and the resurrected blend of fire and ice, we decided to pair him with a cold, refreshing white that’s true to his roots of Wine-terfell. Just as our Carneros Reserve Chardonnay is loved and revered by all, Jon Snow is a character that is adored and continuously rooted for. Best enjoyed in a cave with the one that ignites a fire in your heart, this Chard is the perfect white for our main man Jon.

Arya

Red blends have many faces, just like our brave and trailblazing warrior, Arya. Our Vintner California Red Blend combines a mix of dark fruits, spices, and cocoa with a lasting finish. Just how Arya was brought up as a lady in a noble family but turned into a trained master of death, this blend is a mix of bold grapes with many personalities that will always keep you on your toes.

Sansa

For the woman who’s been to hell and back, we’re pairing her with a dry, crisp rosé, as an ode to the bright future she has ahead of her. Sansa is a fighter, a survivor, and loyal to her family. This Côtes de Provence Rosé can get you through the toughest of days, and it doesn’t hurt that it pairs well with lemony desserts- since lemon cakes are Sansa’s absolute favorite. Keep your chin up Sansa- there are warmer days ahead after taking back Wine-terfell!

The Hound

We thought it was only fitting to pair the hound with our Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, as we can only hope that he will face The Mountain in a duel during this final season! His dark past and big, bold personality (and stature) are mirrored in this wine that’s highly-concentrated, deep in color, with a bit of a bite from a higher tannin.

The Mountain

A character as tall and intimidating as The Mountain deserves a GIANT wine with an even bigger tasting profile. For this reason, we paired The Mountain with our 10 Year Anniversary Magnum Cabernet Sauvignon. This red is not only big in size, it’s also big in flavor. With spicy notes of pepper and oak, and a fruit-forward style with a smooth finish, our California Cabernet is a force to be reckoned with.

The Night King

While frosé may be The Night King’s drink of choice, we went with one of our very first white wines from the ONEHOPE vineyard for this famous White Walker. Fumé Blanc literally translates to “White Smoke,” referring to the smoky flavors that occur when aging Sauvignon Blanc in oak barrels. Our Rutherford Estate Fumé Blanc is aged 10 months in American and French oak, and is characterized by intense aromatics and ripe fruit that lingers on the palate. Enjoy it cold on a warm day and you’ll get chills from this refreshing, clean white wine (walker).

Hold the door… We aren’t done yet! We can’t forget to pour some out for our fallen Westeros homies. (WARNING SPOILERS) Rest in peace Eddard Stark, Catelyn Stark, Rob Stark, Talisa Stark, Rickon Stark, Hodor, Khal Drogo, Ygritte, Oberyn, Lady Olenna, and our beloved magical creatures Summer, Lady, Grey Wind, and Viserion.
