How to Pack Wine in a Suitcase

If you love traveling as much as you love wine, chances are you’re going to need to bring a bottle (or case) along with you on your next flight. So how do you pack wine in a suitcase to ensure it doesn’t explode all over your clothes? Check out our 5 simple steps for traveling with wine below!

1. Check a bag– while this should probably go without saying, it is important to note that you cannot bring a bottle of wine in your carry on. If you want to bring some of your favorite wine with you while you travel, be prepared to check a bag, and pay the fee if your credit card/airline isn’t able to comp it.
2. Wrap your bottles– once you’ve decided which bottles you want to bring in your suitcase, the next step is to securely wrap them. We recommend doing a quick roll in thin bubble wrap, and then placing each bottle in a small trash bag. Tie the bag tightly at the top to prevent leakage.
3. Cushion your bottles– after wrapping them in trash bags, add some extra cushion by wrapping the base of the bottle in a sweater and place the sleeve around the neck. The neck of the bottle is the most fragile part and has the highest potential to break during travel.
4. Pack the bottles in your bag– using an empty suitcase, line your shoes around the perimeter to create a barrier. Place a layer of clothing at the bottom of your suitcase. Next, add the wrapped bottles on top of that layer and use fillers like rolled socks and sweaters to separate the bottles from one another. Throw your remaining clothes on top and make sure your bag is packed as tight as possible. Essentially, create a wine sandwich.
5. Add fragile stickers (optional)– just to be safe, we suggest placing a few “Fragile” stickers on your bag to ensure your luggage is handled with care. This isn’t 100% necessary, but it’s great for peace of mind!
