Stories of Hope: Meet Krystal

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Survivor Stories

Our second story of hope comes from Krystal, a Cause Entrepreneur at ONEHOPE who received her breast cancer diagnosis at the age of 36. Learn more about her journey to survivorship and how she was first introduced to the ONEHOPE community.

“My name is Krystal, and I am a Cause Entrepreneur from Hopatcong, New Jersey. I am the wife of my high school best friend, Kevin, and proud mom of Harper Lily, age 5, and Rowan Sawyer, age 2.

In January 2019, I was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 36 years old. I discovered a lump while I was breastfeeding Rowan and initially ignored it, thinking it was certainly a clogged milk duct. I had no family history of cancer and was young and healthy (at least so I thought). I had never even had a mammogram.  When I learned my diagnosis I went through every emotion you can imagine and have never felt so terrified. I leaned heavily on my family and had my young kids to keep me active and to remind me to always keep pushing forward, but I kept my ordeal pretty private until it was over.

When I finished my final round of chemotherapy and was done with my mastectomy and reconstruction, I began to share my story more publicly in an effort to raise awareness. My dear friend, and now ONEHOPE sponsor, Kendra, heard what I had been through and sent me a rainbow glitter wine bottle as a celebratory gift for finishing my treatment.

Then, in October, she agreed to travel hours from Massachusetts to come all the way to New Jersey to do a ONEHOPE wine tasting for me for Breast Cancer Awareness Month to raise funds for young breast cancer survivors like myself.

I just KNEW that I needed to become a Cause Entrepreneur so I could make an impact for people the way she had done for me during the hardest time in my life.

Now, cancer free and healthy, I look at that rainbow glitter bottle all the time and it reminds me of how strong and powerful I am, and what a strong force we are as a community.”
