Stories of Hope: Meet Yolandra

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Survivor

This year for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, ONEHOPE has chosen to highlight the brave, inspiring, and passionate women in our community that were willing to share their stories of hope. Our first story comes from Yolandra, a Cause Entrepreneur and 2x breast cancer survivor that is dedicated to raising awareness and giving back to those impacted by this disease.

“For years my daughter would introduce me at speaking events with the count of my survivorship. I had attended over 20 events at churches and community organizations as the face of “Worship in Pink” for Komen Coastal Georgia. It was in mid November of 2019, when I was a survivor of 22 years and counting, that I received the call that my routine mammogram results had come back, and so had the cancer.

Unlike the first diagnosis where I only had surgery, this time would require surgery, radiation, and medication for 5 years. This hit me like a ton of bricks after a year where I had already lost both parents within 3 months of each other.

This journey was different. I realized that I really could not depend on anyone but God and myself. Those who told me they would walk the journey with me were gone by the time I had my first radiation treatment. My daughter attended as many appointments as she could. The changes my body endured during this process were truly unbelievable. I burned, became fatigued, experienced breast discoloration, lost my appetite, cried daily, and most of all I saw people through a different set of lenses. I learned more about myself, some things I did not like and some that I really loved. What I finally came to realize is that I was as strong as I believed myself to be.

ONEHOPE and Susan G. KomenOthers have their own lives to live and they will not stop for my issues. Breast cancer teaches you to appreciate your womanhood on a different level. It taught me to love me with all my physical flaws, and to make the very best out of this life.

Shortly after my last radiation appointment and my first follow-up visit where I received a good report, I was introduced to ONEHOPE. Learning about becoming a Cause Entrepreneur provided me with another opportunity to share the healing power of God, and donate to causes that would provide clinical trials for a disease that affects 1 out of every 4 African American women each year.

Whatever I can do to help eradicate the world of cancer I am for it, one bottle, one sip, one tasting, one opportunity at a time. This second and last time around I pray I will continue to count from 8.5 months and counting.”
