Wedding Wine Buying Guide

One-Hope-Wine-70

So, you’ve figured out how much wine you’ll need for your wedding. Now the next task is to decide what kind of varietals you should choose for the big affair. While sparkling wine is a wedding fixture, you also should consider serving one red and one white wine, especially if the reception includes a meal or hors d’oeuvres. Just want to pour a single wine with the meal? A dry rosé is a happy compromise. Here are some tips for the top wedding wines, with special selections gleaned from ONEHOPE’s very own vault of vino.

White Wine

Look to Sauvignon Blanc — a flexible white that goes well with everything from salads to seafood. Try ONEHOPE’s intensely flavored 2014 Rutherford Estate Sauvignon Blanc ($35) or the citrusy California Sauvignon Blanc ($18.99). Or go with a crowd-pleasing Chardonnay that will match a wide array of dishes. Delicious choices include the 2011 Santa Barbara Reserve Chardonnay, with apricot and apple flavors ($24), and the 2014 Carneros Reserve Chardonnay, boasting crisp tropical fruit, apple, and pear flavors with light floral elements and hints of vanilla ($39.99). For a special treat, go for the Pink Glitter Edition California Chardonnay, with a taste of warm butterscotch, vanilla, toffee, and green apple ($59).

Red Wine

Cabernet Sauvignon is the most popular red wine in America, and it’s most suitable for serving with beef and lamb. The ONEHOPE X Trefethen Family Cabernet Sauvignon ($80) is vibrant and deep ruby red, and has enticing aromas of blackberries, black cherries, and currants; while the oak adds clove, cedar and toffee notes. The broody California Cabernet Sauvignon ($18.99) is a tremendous value full of baked blackberry and deep cassis aromas, and Merlot lovers need look no further than the huckleberry- and loganberry-flavored California Merlot ($18.99).

Silky, earthy Pinot Noir is appropriate with many foods — including fish and vegetarian dishes — yet it also pairs nicely with light red meats, pork, and poultry. Pinot can be pricey, but first-rate value can be found in the California Pinot Noir ($18.99), an inviting entry with bright cherries and strawberries with hints of violet pastille and cola, and the Edna Valley Reserve Pinot Noir in a festive red glitter bottle ($69).

For something a little more exotic, consider any of ONEHOPE’s Zinfandels, particularly the California Zinfandel ($18.99), stuffed with juicy vine-ripened berries sure to please most red-wine lovers. The 2012 California Red Wine Blend ($18.99) also is a fine choice.

Rosé

Dry rosé is crisp and fruity, doesn’t have the sweetness of white Zinfandel and other blush wines, and complements salads, poultry, pork, tuna, salmon, and even sirloin. Rosé also hits the spot in both warm and cool weather, and both day and night. The affordable El Dorado Rosé ($18.99) is a bright, aromatic vintage bursting with strawberries and hints of juniper, pine resin, cinnamon spice, and ripe summer melons.

Sparkling

For a Champagne-like bubbly to kick your wedding, try ONEHOPE’s California Brut Sparkling Wine ($18.99), with a light color and aromas of fresh green apple, nectarine, and fresh baked bread. Crisp, intriguing fresh fruit reminiscent of succulent peach, sweet berries and pear linger on the palate, finishing with creamy and refreshing bubbles. This Brut Sparkling Wine can be paired with appetizers, seafood, and sushi, as well as a range of desserts and cheeses. And don’t forget our Glitter Edition Brut Sparkling Wines ($59), a beautiful selection in special silver, gold and rainbow bottles.
