What is the Best Temperature for Storing Wine?

Some of us don’t have the patience, willpower, or desire to let wine age beautifully at home. The second our favorite UPS truck, or adult ice cream truck as we like to call it, comes by with a wine delivery, we know it’s only a matter of hours (or minutes) until we can pop that cork and pour ourselves a healthy glass.

But for those that do have the strength to wait it out and store multiple bottles of wine, there actually is a method for keeping your wine fresh and delicious. If you’ve ever left a bottle out on a wine rack or bar cart for too long, chances are you’ve likely drank something that’s gone bad, or at the very least tastes slightly off. We’re here to make sure you never make that mistake again… because wine is too precious to go to waste.

Wine Storage

Should White Wine and Red Wine Be Stored Differently?

If you’ve ever been told that it’s best to keep white wine it the fridge, and red wine out at room temperature, we’d like to quickly debunk that myth. The truth is that all wines, regardless of color, are best stored within the range of 45-65 degrees, with 55 degrees being the sweet spot! If a wine you’ve purchased is meant to be aged, this temperature will ensure that the flavors of the wine will evolve and develop as intended by the winemaker. Now that you know the best temperature for storing them, what is the best temperature for enjoying them?

Best Temperature for Serving Red Wine

While both reds and whites are ideally stored at 55 degrees, that doesn’t mean that is the best temperature for serving them. If a wine is too cold, it can be difficult to detect the subtle nuances and flavors of the varietal. Similarly if your wine is too hot, it can end up tasting like warm berries, but not in a delicious grandma’s homemade pie kind of way.

The ideal temperature for serving red wine is between 62-68 degrees. If you’re off by a degree or so, don’t sweat it. As long as you are as close to that range as possible, you’re golden.

Red Wine Storage

Best Temperature for Serving White Wine

If you’ve ever seen commercials for beer that is meant to be as cold as a glacier, we’d like you to know that the likely reason this is being advertised is because the flavor of the beer is pretty poor, and the colder it is, the better it is masked. The same goes for wine. If a wine is icy cold, you won’t be able to truly enjoy the citrus notes, acidity, and flavor profile that the winemaker worked so hard to achieve.

When serving white wine, aim for a temperature between 49-55 degrees. If you’re storing it properly at the range we recommended, that means as soon as you take it out of your wine fridge or temperature controlled room, you get to enjoy it!
