February is Heart Health Month

Did you know that heart disease is currently the #1 cause of death in the United States? It happens all too often that tragedy strikes and a loved one suffers a massive heart attack without knowing the signs or symptoms. You can be perfectly healthy, exercise regularly, and still fall victim to heart disease. During the month of February, we want to help spread awareness about heart health, and how you can support the cause year round.

The Heart Foundation

Our nonprofit cause partner, The Heart Foundation, is on a mission to save lives by increasing awareness of heart disease, promoting early detection, and supporting the innovative research taking place at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute under the direction of world-renowned cardiologist Dr. P.K. Shah.

Inspired by the loss of Steven Cohen who died unexpectedly of a tragic heart attack at the age of 35, The Heart Foundation works tirelessly to ensure that one day we will live in a world where no life is lost to heart disease.

What is Heart Disease?

1 in 7 Americans die from heart related issues. According to The Heart Foundation, “Heart disease is actually a broad term used for a wide variety of diseases of the heart and blood vessels such as coronary artery disease, heart rhythm disorders called arrhythmias and defects of the heart present at birth, also called congenital heart defects.” It is important to note that Heart Disease is not just referring to heart attacks, although as you continue reading, you’ll find how prevalent they are in our country.

Symptoms of a Heart Attack

Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a heart attack. This statistic is not meant to scare you, but to bring awareness to an issue that often goes unmentioned in our country. Here are a few ways The Heart Foundation says you can recognize a heart attack:

  • Loss of consciousness- this can be the first symptom of a heart attack
  • Shortness of breath or fatigue a few days to a few weeks may occur before an attack
  • Pain in the middle of the chest that spreads to the back, jaw, or arms
  • Gas like pain or pressure that is often mistaken for indigestion during an attack
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Nausea & vomiting which are sometimes mistaken for food poisoning or the stomach flu
  • Bluishness of the lips, hands or feet
  • Heavy pounding of the heart or abnormal heart rhythms
  • Feelings of restlessness, sweatiness, or anxiety
