Slide into Super Bowl Sunday with These Easy, Wine-friendly Appetizers

The Super Bowl is here! Or should we say, the best commercials of the year followed by an epic half-time concert, bookended with some football. Either way, you’ll be winning with these delicious dips and award-winning wines! We’re sharing our 3 all-time favorite dips from the test kitchen that need to be in your recipe repertoire.

White Cheddar & Gouda Queso

30 minutes  |  Serves: 8-10

Wine Pairing: Monterey Pinot Noir

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter
  • ½ white onion, minced
  • ½ jalapeno, minced (save a few circular slices for garnish)
  • 12 ounces white cheddar cheese, grated
  • 8 ounces gouda cheese, grated
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • blue corn tortilla chips

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a medium sized saucepan over medium heat, and add in onion and jalapeno. Saute for 15 minutes until soft & onions are translucent. Add white cheddar, gouda and heavy cream and stir until melted. Season with salt & pepper.
  2. Garnish with a couple of slices of jalapeno and serve alongside corn tortilla chips.


Caramelized Onion Dip with Sweet Potato Chips

1 hour, 15 minutes  |  Serves 6-8

Wine Pairing: Vintner Sparkling Brut

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 yellow onions, diced
  • 1 ½ cups sour cream
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground pepper
  • 1 teaspoon minced chives
  • Sweet potato or vegetable chips

Instructions

  1. Pour olive oil onto a 2 burner stovetop griddle, over as low of heat as your stove allows. Add in onions and let slowly caramelize over the course of 45 minutes – 1 hour, stirring occasionally, until they are light golden brown & somewhat translucent. They will reduce in volume by about half. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Set sour cream and cream cheese into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, and mix on low speed until combined. 
  3. Add in caramelized onions, worcestershire, honey, salt & pepper and hand mix together with a rubber spatula. Scoop into a mixing bowl and garnish with minced chives. Serve with vegetables or sweet potato chips.


Guacamole

30 minutes  |  Serves: 15-20

Wine Pairing: Vintner Chardonnay

Ingredients:

  • 8 avocados, peeled, pitted & mashed
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice (save a lime slice for garnish)
  • 2 roma tomatoes, seeds removed and chopped
  • ¼ cup red onion, minced
  • 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
  • ½ red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 (1 ounce) guacamole seasoning packet
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground pepper 
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika (for garnish)
  • corn chips

Instructions:

  1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  2. Garnish with a sprig of cilantro, a circular lime slice and a sprinkling of paprika. Serve with corn chips.
