Pop in a Movie & Pop a Bottle

We love a night where we get to throw on our sweats, grab the coziest blanket in the house, and sit back as we enjoy a great movie with a great glass of wine. If you’re planning an upcoming movie night, we’ve got the perfect pairings for you. Check out the list of some of our favorite films that are all about vino, and our favorite ONEHOPE wines to enjoy as you watch.

Sideways – When a struggling writer/wine enthusiast and his best friend head to wine country for a bachelor party, things are bound to get pretty wild. This 2004 film starring Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Sandra Oh and Virginia Madsen brought California’s wine country in the forefront of mainstream media, while simultaneously creating lasting reputations for a few of our beloved varietals. While Paul Giamatti’s character, Miles, shares his extreme distaste for Merlot in the film, he also speaks highly of Pinot Noir. According to NPR, “a dozen years later, pinot noir has become a mainstay of the California wine industry, and winemakers credit the film with bringing deserved attention to the varietal, calling it “The Sideways Effect.”

For this reason, we’ve paired one of our favorite wine films, Sideways, with our Russian River Valley Reserve Pinot Noir. We like to think that Miles would give his stamp of approval on this one!

Bottle Shock- Based on a true story, Bottle Shock showcases the events leading up to the infamous blind Paris Tasting of 1976. The story is told through the father and son duo of Jim and Bo Barrett, played by Bill Pullman and Chris Pine, who founded Chateau Montelena in the early 1970s. Their Chardonnay went on to win in what was eventually coined as “The Judgement of Paris.”

Pair this movie with our neighboring Carneros Reserve Chardonnay and learn all about how a simple Calistoga chard stole the show.

Somm- Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a Master Sommelier? Enter Somm, a documentary that follows the lives of four wine stewards as their prepare to take one of the world’s most prestigious tests: the Master Sommelier Exam. Witness their sophisticated palates at work, the immense stress they must endure, and the level of preparation for an exam with one of the lowest pass rates in the world.

Enjoy the film while sipping our iconic Rutherford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine Country- One of the latest and greatest wine movies to hit Neflix, Wine Country is a comedy about six women that head to Napa Valley to celebrate a 50th birthday party. The film was produced and directed by Amy Poehler who stars alongside her hilarious friends Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, Emily Spivey, Jason Schwartzman, and Tina Fey.

Pair it with your best girlfriends and a bottle of Vintner California Sauvignon Blanc

Mondovino- Directed by American filmmaker Jonathan Nossiter, Mondovino is a documentary surrounding the impact of globalization on the world’s most prestigious wine regions. Shot on three continents, with five different languages, over the course of three years, Mondovino showcases the multi-generational families, rivalries, alliances, and conspiracies in the ever-evolving wine industry.

Enjoy this intricate documentary with a glass of our Napa Valley Reserve Merlot.

Red Obsession- Narrated by Russell Crowe, this documentary takes you on a journey from Bordeaux to Beijing as it explores the Chinese demand for France’s finest wine that has caused the price of this infamous red to skyrocket.

Watch in awe with a glass of red that we’re currently obsessed with: Vintner Collection California Red Blend.
