Q: Are all sparkling wines Champagne?

A: NO! While any form of bubbly if often called champagne by common nomenclature, the truth is that only sparkling wines produced in the Champagne region of France have earned the right to be called champagne. Other common names for sparkling wines include Prosecco, Corvina, and American Sparkler. That one just sounds like fun!

Q: What’s the most popular type of white wine?

A: Well, that depends on where you are when you order. In some countries it’s Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc, but here in the United States it’s Chardonnay. Chardonnay is likely the most popular white wine in the world, and can be produced and consumed in a variety of ways.

Q: What’s the most popular type of red wine?

A: Reds can be polarizing. Seems like everyone has a favorite that they’re deeply loyal to, so choosing a single most popular variety could be challenge. Despite deep loyalties from Pinot Noir and Merlot lovers, the most popular red in America is Cabernet Sauvignon.

Q: Is drinking wine really good for me?

A: In moderation? You betcha, especially if you favor the reds. Red wines are rich in antioxidants. Studies also show that they’re good for your heart, can help lower cholesterol, and can help men with sperm count.

Q: I’m going to a wine tasting. Do I really have to spit the wine out?

A: You don’t have to. Many people choose to spit each sample in order to avoid over consumption and intoxication. Others choose to consume each sample to truly get a feel for the entire experience. Your experience is your choice.

Q: Boxed wines are cheap, and terrible quality, right?

A: Not anymore! While boxed wines used to be noted for little more than their attractive price point, these days they’ve got a lot going for them! Not only are they more environmentally friendly, they also have a far superior shelf life compared to bottled wines, some whites can stay fresh for up to 3 months in the fridge. This makes boxed wines a great option for those who only consume a glass a night. Plus, as technology has evolved, boxed wines are able to be really comparable to bottled wines as far as bouquet and flavor goes, too.

Q: How do I know what wine to pair with my dinner?

A: This is another area where there doesn’t have to be hard and fast rules. Drink the flavors you like, no matter what the wine concierge tells you is appropriate. If you want to follow the old school rules though, pair your wine with your flavor palette, not just the protein. In general, white meats (chicken, fish, and pork) go with white wines. Red meats (beef, veal) go with red wines.

Q: Can I chill a red wine?

A: Do you like the flavor of a red chilled? Then by all means, chill it. Some reds, like Corvina, are great served cool- especially when it’s hot outside. Traditionally though, reds are served at room temperature or between 60-70 degrees.

Q: How long will opened wine remain fresh?

A: Once the cork is popped you’ve got about 36 hours at room temperature, or a week inside of the fridge.
