Stories of Hope: Meet Raquel

breast cancer awareness monthOur final story of hope comes from Raquel, a new Cause Entrepreneur with ONEHOPE who was looking for a way to support breast cancer research after losing her mom to this disease at a young age. Inspired by her mother’s altruistic nature, Raquel joined our CE Community and has been making an impact ever since.

“Hi! My name is Raquel, and I’m 51 years old with four amazing, beautiful kids! I grew up in Brooklyn, NY, and I am the oldest of four. I come from a very large extended family.  My mom was one of 13! Crazy!! That gives me 37 first cousins!! We grew up very close to one another and didn’t need friends because we always had each other.

My mom was just shy of turning 50 when she was taken away by this horrible disease. She battled breast cancer for a few years, and it took everything she had to fight it until the end. Up to her very last breath, she said she couldn’t leave us. I was only 29 at the time, and my youngest sibling was just 14. She still had so much to do, so much to live for. I did not mourn my mom when I should have because I had two younger siblings that needed me. I guess I am the luckiest one to have had her for as many years as I did. I still wake up and cannot believe she is not with us. I will never get over it.  But I have to say that it made me an even stronger mom! I cannot absorb my kids enough.

My mom was the strongest, smartest woman I knew.  She taught me to reach for whatever I wanted. To go for everything I can go for. And that’s exactly what I did. I never settled for less. I wanted to see the world, make something out of myself, and make her proud. I raised two amazing children alone until I met their father, and after a while we decided to grow our family, and we had two more incredible children.

breast cancer stories of hopeMy mom volunteered for everything! She helped anyone and everyone because that was the person she was – selfless and so giving, literally up to the day she passed. I wanted to be just like her. When ONEHOPE came to me I knew this was my thing! This was the opportunity that was going to complete me. Giving back was what I always did but always wanted to do more! ONEHOPE has given me just that! My mom was taken from us by a horrible disease, and I have always said there has to be something that I can do to honor her. The fact that I can do something that I LOVE so much and make an impact at the same time is truly just priceless! I know she is looking down on me and is very, very proud! I have such immense gratitude and satisfaction that my passion for something is making an impact and a difference.”
