“Hi! My name is Raquel, and I’m 51 years old with four amazing, beautiful kids! I grew up in Brooklyn, NY, and I am the oldest of four. I come from a very large extended family. My mom was one of 13! Crazy!! That gives me 37 first cousins!! We grew up very close to one another and didn’t need friends because we always had each other.
My mom was just shy of turning 50 when she was taken away by this horrible disease. She battled breast cancer for a few years, and it took everything she had to fight it until the end. Up to her very last breath, she said she couldn’t leave us. I was only 29 at the time, and my youngest sibling was just 14. She still had so much to do, so much to live for. I did not mourn my mom when I should have because I had two younger siblings that needed me. I guess I am the luckiest one to have had her for as many years as I did. I still wake up and cannot believe she is not with us. I will never get over it. But I have to say that it made me an even stronger mom! I cannot absorb my kids enough.
My mom was the strongest, smartest woman I knew. She taught me to reach for whatever I wanted. To go for everything I can go for. And that’s exactly what I did. I never settled for less. I wanted to see the world, make something out of myself, and make her proud. I raised two amazing children alone until I met their father, and after a while we decided to grow our family, and we had two more incredible children.
